Use of Field Symbols instead of Case When

Hi Experts,

I have to sum up the values in the DMBTR field of BSID table based on the special indicator type. So if user gives A spl gl I have to sum up all the A Spl gl fields.....like that there are special indicators till z. So instead of using case when how can i use field symbol concept.
